The concert “Synthesis of Contrasts” introduced an extraordinary collaboration between violinist Ludmila Pavlová and double bassist Indi Stivín, who created a unique musical experience together. The concert unfolded in an atmosphere where classical music intertwined with modern elements, thanks to a carefully selected repertoire and the innovative lighting design by Martin Krupa.
The concert’s first part opened with “Song of the Troubadour” by M. Gajdoš, which beautifully showcased the lyrical possibilities of both instruments. It was followed by “Duo for Violin and Double Bass” by E. Glière in an arrangement that emphasized the contrasting yet harmonious dialogue between the violin and double bass. P. Vasks’ “Bass Trip” for solo double bass introduced the audience to deep and reflective soundscapes, while the premiere of Indi Stivín’s piece for violin and double bass and his “Capriccio di Bravida” for solo double bass demonstrated his ability to connect complex techniques with emotional expression. A. Pärt’s “Fratres” then concluded this part, bringing meditative calm and spiritual depth.
After the break, “Two-Part Inventions” by J.S. Bach were performed, showcasing extraordinary polyphony and interaction between the violin and double bass. K. Penderecki’s “Duo for Violin and Double Bass” moved the musical dialogue into avant-garde waters, where technical virtuosity and innovative sound effects created a fascinating musical landscape. A. Piazzolla’s selection of “3 Tangos for Violin and Double Bass” then brought passionate rhythms and the melodic beauty of tango, perfectly concluding the concert.
The lighting design by Martin Krupa played a key role in the overall perception of the concert. The lights were carefully aligned with the musical pieces, highlighting emotional moments and adding another dimension to the interpretations. The dynamic lighting and shadow play not only underscored the drama and intimacy of the music but also visually connected the audience with the artists, strengthening the link between music and its visual presentation.
