If I claim to be… (2022)

An essayistic video working in the form of a dialogue between two characters who approach from different perspectives. Both characters are interpreted by one performer (probably the author himself), who uses reduced significant settings and props. This dialogue creates an environment between the different levels of the author himself and his resolution of dilemmas in evaluating and categorizing art, as well as loose questions of perception and the intertwining of conservative and liberal approaches.

One role is loosely inspired by shared materiality, the creation of an art class, artistic equality, and collective art based on Marx’s theses. The other role is based on the principle of shared values, ideas and thoughts, which is associated with individualism, conservatism and a strong institutionalisation of art, i.e. a loose interpretation of the Hegelian approach.

Art can be similar to a political program that is involved in a spiral of knowledge. And it is important where the artist is at the moment and what his or her attitudes are. What is his or her creative freedom, creative potential, is there artistic equality and justice, social responsibility, or is the spectre of art circling Europe?

In the dialogue the author wants to discuss the questions of the position and value of the artist, the search for where the artist himself is on the spiral, whether he is behind, ahead or not deviating in the developmental spiral. What is the question of competition, winning and losing and what impact do they have on the author himself. Is there an artistic class struggle? Is there an artistic class struggle? Is individuation the only way?
