In Between – Somewhere in between. In the inter-space. In the in-between time.
Where are we when we act in the online realm? Somewhere in between—between reality, virtuality and fiction? How does time pass there? Does it flow like the time on our watches, or does everything happen only in an inter-space, in an in-between time?
Today we inhabit this in-between almost constantly. Each day we move along the threshold of everyday reality and an online world that penetrates us without pause. In this expanding virtual terrain, are we still able to recognise where online fiction ends and reality begins, or have we already become fully disoriented?
For his site-specific multi-channel projection created for Gallery 2, Martin Krupa works precisely with principles that balance on the edge of reality and virtual fiction. In his long-term research he continually probes the form of multi-channel projection—not only its formal structure but also its alternative narrativity and its capacity for deconstruction. In the exhibition project In Between he experiments with the very material of the projection surfaces, conjuring illusions of 3-D space and playing with reflective planes that further fracture the image.
In Between fuses a virtual, fictional world rendered in three dimensions with the tangible environment, allowing real people to meet avatars and interact with living and inert 3-D models. Across three projection screens banal micro-stories unfold, yet each bears traces of incongruity or ellipsis. They exist somewhere in between; they fill the gaps of the everyday. Krupa’s modelled universe therefore invites viewers to explore the connections between individual 3-D spaces and ordinary situations. Its mosaic structure lets every visitor find a personal narrative thread—just as one might interpret one’s own story if one could glimpse oneself somewhere in between. Somewhere In Between.
